Vinyl Or Fibre Cement

Two good answers, depending on the house

Neither material is the trick answer. One costs less and never needs painting; the other takes a hail strike without cracking and holds a finish for years. We fit Allside vinyl as our main line, and fibre cement where the house calls for it. Here is the honest trade-off.

Insulated vinyl

Lower cost per square, faster to hang Colour runs through — never needs painting Insulated backing adds a little R-value Wide range of profiles and colours Right choice on most rentals and starter homes

Fibre cement

Takes a hail strike without cracking Holds a painted finish for many years Reads as real wood from the street Will not burn, and insects have no interest Costs more and takes longer to hang
What Is Under There

We look at the wall before we cover it

Siding is the last layer, not the whole system. Most of the failures we get called out to started as water behind the old siding that nobody looked for. So we open it up first.

What To Look For

Signs your siding is past repair

Siding rarely fails all at once. It gets slowly worse for a few seasons, and then a storm finishes it.

Boards buckling or coming looseWarped runs and popped nails mean the fastening or the wall behind has moved. Soft spots and stainingPress it — if it gives, water has been sitting behind it long enough to reach the sheathing. Paint that will not holdRepainting every couple of years is usually the wall telling you it is holding moisture. Wasps, ants or squirrels getting inOnce something is nesting behind the siding, there is a gap that will not close itself. Hail dents and cracked panelsVinyl cracks in a hail event, and it is assessed alongside your roof.

How It Works

Four steps, and you know the price before we start

No surprises halfway through. If we find rot once the old siding is off, you see it and approve the cost before we carry on.

Walk the elevationsWe look at all four sides, check the trim and fascia, and open a section where we suspect water has been getting in. Choose material and colourSamples on your wall, in your light. We price the options side by side rather than steering you to one. Strip, repair, wrapOld siding comes off and gets hauled away. Siding Questions

Frequently asked questions

How do I know whether siding can be repaired or needs replacing?
If the damage is contained to a few boards and the sheathing behind them is sound, a repair is the right call and we will say so. Once water has been getting behind the siding long enough to soften the sheathing, patching only hides it. We open a section and look before quoting.
Vinyl or fibre cement — which should I choose?
Vinyl costs less, installs faster and never needs painting. Fibre cement holds a painted finish for years, takes a hit without cracking and looks closer to real wood, but it costs more and takes longer to hang. Both are sound choices in this climate; the deciding factor is usually budget and how long you plan to stay.
Will new siding lower my energy bills?
Some, but the siding itself is not the insulation. The gain comes from the housewrap and any insulated backing that goes on behind it, and from finally sealing the gaps around windows and penetrations. We will tell you what to realistically expect rather than promise a number.
Does insurance cover siding damage?
Often, after hail or wind. Hail dents and cracks vinyl and it is assessed alongside the roof, so if a storm took your shingles the siding is worth having looked at in the same visit. We document it and deal with the adjuster. See our insurance claims help.
How long does a siding job take?
Most single-family homes run three to five working days, longer if there is rotten sheathing to replace or a lot of trim detail. We give you the schedule before we start and tell you if it changes.
Do you replace the trim, soffit and fascia too?
Yes, and usually you should. Wrapping fascia and soffit in aluminium or vinyl at the same time is what removes the painting and the rot for good. Doing the walls and leaving bare wood trim is a job half done.
Can you match siding on an addition or a repair?
We try, and we are honest when it cannot be done. Older siding fades, and profiles get discontinued. Where an exact match is not available we will show you the closest option and where the transition will be visible before you commit.
Do you offer financing on siding?
Yes. We offer financing through Allside and through Builders Discount on projects up to $20,000. We will walk you through the options alongside the quote so you can see the monthly figure before you decide anything.
What does the lifetime warranty cover?
Two layers. Allside siding carries a lifetime manufacturer warranty on the material itself, and our own work is covered by a written workmanship warranty. You get both in writing at handover, and we register the manufacturer coverage for you rather than leaving it as something you have to chase.
